A lot of people are afraid to meditate because they believe it’s a sin. But what does the Bible really say about meditation?
Is meditation a sin? It’s a great question that is asked by Christians as well as people from various backgrounds.
Many Christians have grappled with this issue and feel conflicted about pursuing a meditation practice, while others find it is not an issue at all.
Meditation is defined as the contemplation or thoughtfulness of a subject, often to develop one’s inner spirit and character.
There is also another definition for mediation that is more synonymous with yoga or eastern practices, where individuals meditate on something in order to get into some kind of “trance” state.
In essence, many people wonder if they can do Biblical meditation without engaging in eastern influences such as Hinduism and Buddhism.
Meditation has been around for thousands of years, and it’s still a topic that generates much debate.
Some people believe meditation is a sin because they think it conflicts with the Christian church or other religions.
Meditation does not conflict with any religion; in fact, many religions endorse meditation to some degree.
Meditation can be seen as an act of self-care and humility before God, so there are definitely religious reasons why you would want to meditate!
Meditation has been scientifically proven time after time to have tremendous benefits from holistic health concerns such as anxiety management all the way up to reducing blood pressure levels.
Before we answer whether or not “Is Meditation A Sin?”, we must first ask the question: What Is Sin?
Sin is defined in the Bible as a transgression against God’s law (1 John 3:4).
This is the Ten Commandments, as well as the other 613 commandments given throughout the Torah.
The New Testament takes is a step further, saying that “Whatsoever that is not of faith; is a sin” (Romans 14:23).
Is it a sin? NO! There are many reasons why you would want to meditate: spiritual growth, stress reduction, health benefits and more!
Meditation is just one way that allows us to connect with our Christian spirituality.
Still, many people struggle with whether or not it is a sin to meditate.
Yet, the Bible is full of verses about meditation, contemplation and prayer.
It provides an example of how meditation and prayer lead to peace, understanding and connection with God.
A common practice of Jesus as well as the prophets and disciples as described in the Bible was drawing away into the secret place to pray and seek God. This was done for hours on end.
They would enter prayer with a question, ask the Lord and come away with a peace about the situation or even what to do next.
They also had many angelic encounters during their prayer time as well!
Many Christians have found meditation to be helpful in their spiritual journey.
Meditation is also a wonderful way to quiet yourself when you have too much going on in your mind – which makes sense.
If Jesus himself was said to pray before making important grappled with this issue and feel conflicted about pursuing a meditation practice, while others find it is not an issue at all.
For the Christian, meditation and prayer are coupled together. It is said that;
“Prayer is where we speak to God, Meditation is where God speaks to us.”
So with that in mind, if you were to have a conversation with a friend or loved one, would you enter into that conversation with other things on your mind?
Doesn’t your spouse or friend deserve your undivided attention? Then how much more so does God?
It is a good and safe practice to bring your mind into subjection and train it not to focus on other things during prayer and meditation.
I can tell you that it is something you will get better at with each practice.
The biggest problem we hear from people with meditation is that it can be hard to stick with the habit.
It takes a lot of effort and discipline, especially at first when you are just getting started.
There are so many distractions in your life that make building this new habit difficult.
